Why 99% of Players Miscalculate Andariel's Essence: The Hidden Truth of Quest Drop Tables
Hello. After walking the 3.3 drop tables in the source TSV again, this is why Andariel’s essence numbers split in the community.
The 3.3 drop guide only lists result rates. This post is the table trap. Even if TreasureClassEx still has an Andariel (H) tes=1 row, live farming uses Andarielq with tes=7.
[One-line takeaway]
- Andariel’s body uses the
Andarielqtable for both normal farming and quest drops. - The
Andariel/Andariel (N)/Andariel (H)rows inTreasureClassExare never called from monstats. - The 3.3 Hell farm table is
Andarielq (H), and Twisted Essence of Suffering has weight 7. - A 7× weight is not a 7× drop. Gear and no-drop rise with it, so per pick it is about 2.33% → 2.51%, and per kill (at least one) about 15% → 16%.
1. The file has two rows
Hell difficulty in TreasureClassEx.txt.
| Row name | tes weight | 3.2 → 3.3 | Called from monstats? |
|---|---|---|---|
Andariel (H) | 1 | stays 1 | never |
Andarielq (H) | 7 | 1 → 7 | normal farm and quest |
Open only Andariel (H) and tes=1 reads as “Andariel essence is unchanged in 3.3.” That row did not change a single cell from 3.2 to 3.3.
The live farm numbers sit in Andarielq (H).
2. monstats only points at the q table
Andariel body row in monstats.txt.
TreasureClass/TreasureClass(N)/TreasureClass(H)=Andarielq/Andarielq (N)/Andarielq (H)- All three
TreasureClassQuestdifficulties are the same q table
Other act bosses split the normal farm table from the first-quest (q) table. That is normal for Duriel, Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal.
A full 3.3 monstats pass shows Andariel is the only monster whose normal TC and quest TC match on all three difficulties.
So for Andariel, Andarielq is not a “quest-only bonus.” It is the normal farm table. The site calculator already uses Andarielq (H).
3. 2.51% per pick, not 7×
Hell, 1 player, Andarielq (H), 7 picks.
3.2
- No-drop 19 + gear 19 + Good 3 + tes 1 + Ancient statue 1 = 43
- tes per pick 1/43 ≈ 2.33%
- statue per pick 1/43 ≈ 2.33%
3.3
- No-drop 125 + gear 125 + Good 20 + tes 7 + Ancient statue 2 = 279
- tes per pick 7/279 ≈ 2.51%
- statue per pick 2/279 ≈ 0.72%
Do not read the essence weight as 7× by itself. The denominator (no-drop and gear) grew with it.
Seven picks make “at least one tes” about 15% → 16%. It is not seven essences per kill.
The Terror Zone entrance table Andarielq Item (H) Desecrated A also goes tes 3→7, about 2.34% → 2.50% per pick. Desecrated B–H are not dead rows; they are group/level upgrade rows.
The area is Catacombs Level 4.
4. Is the same trap elsewhere?
Andariel is the only boss whose “normal row is dead.”
The other bosses are the opposite: if you only open the q table, the 3.3 essence buff is invisible.
| Boss | Normal farm table (the 3.3 edit) | First-quest q table |
|---|---|---|
| Duriel | Duriel (H) - Base tes 2→7, about 2.86% → 3.87% per pick | Durielq (H) - Base tes=2 unchanged, no statue slot |
| Mephisto | Mephisto (H) ceh 1→3, about 1.22% → 1.71% per pick | Mephistoq (H) ceh=1 unchanged, no statue |
| Diablo | Diablo (H) bet 1→3, same pattern | Diabloq (H) essence weight unchanged, no statue |
| Baal | Baal (H) fed 1→3, same pattern | Baalq (H) essence weight unchanged, no statue |
Andariel’s q table still has an Ancient statue slot. The other bosses’ q tables do not. That is why a first quest clear should not be expected to drop a statue.
The official essence name is shared by Andariel and Duriel. Both are Twisted Essence of Suffering (tes). Mephisto is Charged Essence of Hatred, Diablo is Burning Essence of Terror, Baal is Festering Essence of Destruction.
5. What to open
- In the source file, open
Andarielq (H), notAndariel (H) - For rates, use the drop calculator or the Andariel bestiary
- Result rates (per pick / per kill) live in the drop guide. This post is only the table trap.
[Three things to remember]
- The tes=1 row can stay in the file and still not be the farm table.
- tes=7 is a weight, not a 7× drop chance.
- For the other bosses, you must open the normal farm row — not the q row — to see the 3.3 buff.
