How to use

  1. Set monster levelUse the slider for Hell endgame areas, 85-95 covers most boss/CS monsters.
  2. Enter your MFSum gear + mercenary MF. 300% MF gives only ~136 effective MF for uniques due to diminishing returns.
  3. Pick rarity and read oddsChoose unique or set. The tool shows 1-in-N runs and % chance per pick using D2R's real formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't more Magic Find scale linearly?
D2R applies a diminishing returns formula: effMF = floor(MF × factor / (MF + factor)). The factor is 250 for uniques and 500 for sets. At MF=300, unique effMF=136 and set effMF=187. At MF=1000, unique effMF reaches only 200. Doubling your gear MF past 400% gives very little extra effective MF.
Why do set items benefit more from MF than uniques?
Set items use mfFactor=500 versus 250 for uniques. The larger factor produces a gentler diminishing curve. However sets roll AFTER uniques in D2R's quality order, so the base pre-MF chance is lower. Net effect: high MF benefits sets proportionally more, but uniques still have the higher absolute drop rate at typical MF ranges.
Why is monster level 85 special?
At mlvl 85 in Hell, the quality roll can produce every unique or set item up to qlvl 87. Below mlvl 85, top-tier items like Tyrael's Might (qlvl 87) or Windforce (qlvl 73) cannot drop. The 85+ areas (Chaos Sanctuary, Baal throne, Travincal, Pit etc.) are therefore the standard farming targets.
Is there a Magic Find cap?
The game engine has no hard MF cap, but the diminishing returns curve creates a practical efficiency ceiling. For uniques with factor=250, the effective MF approaches 250 asymptotically — beyond 400% gear MF the marginal gain per 1% is under 0.5%. For sets (factor=500) the useful range extends to about 800-1000% before plateauing. Stacking MF past these points is typically worse than trading damage or survivability for it.
How accurate is this calculator versus the actual game?
The core formulas — chance = (baseChance − (ilvl−qlvl)/divisor) × 128 and the MF diminishing returns — are exactly those used by D2R's engine. This landing page simplifies to a single-pick single-TC demo with qualityMod=0 and assumes non-class-specific items. Real monster drops involve multi-level TC chains, picks count, nodrop weights, and rarity pool subdivision — for exact per-monster calculations use the full Drop Engine at /drop.

Full engine supports multi-TC, party play, and class-specific items (state from this page is NOT carried over).
